The ‘Attention in a Pub’ Curve

This is a mental framework that I realised many are following when it comes to learning new things.

Let’s say that you go to a party in a pub.

You start talking about the things that you learned about recently.

Let’s take the example of Bitcoin.

You read about Bitcoin recently.

You start talking about it, and voila, you have the attention of everyone around you!

You start talking about the blockchain and you are still getting more and more attention.

Then, you reach a point.

Let’s say that you start talking about the elliptic curve equations or the transaction mechanisms of Bitcoin.

I call this the ‘Point of downfall’.

Beyond this point, your conversation becomes too complex and you start appearing like a nerd.

Why this curve?

The learning curve for most ends at the ‘Point of downfall’.

Most optimise to gain knowledge so as to look cool in a social setting.

What should you do?

Escape the mentality. Break the curve.

Learn things because they are interesting and worthwhile.

Learn things as if there is no one to tell about them.
